Health & Safety

Most of our Wire Enamels, Varnishes, UP & other Resins and Hardener products are hazards such as flammable, poisonous, corrosive, etc. After the material is emptied from containers by customers, the handling, disposal and cleaning needs careful consideration from both health and safety of workmen and environmental pollution.

The following general guidelines are provided, based on our present state of knowledge, Customers are requested to, however, find out local Government and Corporation / Municipal Rules and abide them.

Safety Modules

  1. Handling of Empty Containers
  2. Disposal of Empty Drums
  3. Cleaning of Empty Drums

  1. Handling of Empty Containers

    1. Emptied containers should never be stored in open condition. Tighten the lid or cover to prevent contamination and water ingress.

    2. As a good practice, remove as much as possible, material from drum. Rinse the drum with respective solvent (for Wire Enamels and Varnishes) and respective diluent (for UP Resin) approx. 5 kg for 200 kg drum and 1 kg for 21 kg & 25 kg drums. Try and use this rinsed solvent / diluent in the process (for thinning, etc.).

    3. The empty drum still contains residual quantity of hazardous product and flammable solvents. They should, therefore, be handled with due care. Empty drums should never be used to store food stuff, water or any other material for human / animal consumption.

  2. Disposal of Empty Drums

According to the State Pollution Control Rules, empty drums should be sold / disposed off only to the reconditioners approved by the State Pollution Control Board . (A list of approved reconditioners may be procured from State Pollution Control Board). When such a list is not available, the empty drums should be sold to reconditioners of repute with instructions for cleaning the drums.

  3. Cleaning of Empty Drums

    1. Rinse the empty drums with solvents used as true solvents depending on the materials in the drums. See Table 1 for guidelines for selecting solvent. Remove the rinsed solvent - material mixture and incinerate under controlled conditions.

    2. Put the drum on a rotating fixture (10 - 15 rpm). Put steel chain inside the drum and plenty of water (approx. 30 - 50 litre in 200 litre drum). Roll the drums with water and chain inside and bunk / lid closed for approx. 10 minutes. Remove contaminated water.

    3. Rinse again with fresh water (30 - 50 litre in 200 litre drum) by repeating step 3.2

    4. Contaminated water resulting from cleaning procedure 3.2 & 3.3. should be treated in effluent treatment plant, to make water safe for draining out.

Suggested solvents for rinsing at cleaning stage
Wire Enamels (Cresol soluble) N-Methyl Pyrolidone
Wire Enamels (Cresol soluble) Respective varnish thinner (or)Xylene (or) Butyl Alcohol
Wire Enamels (Cresol soluble) Respective varnish thinner (or)Xylene (or) Butyl Alcohol
Epoxy Resin drums (Dobeckot/Dobefil) Xylene
UP Resin containers (Dobeckan) Diluent M (or) Monostyrene
